Colombian Military Plane Crashes, Leaving 66 Dead
The Hercules C-130 transport plane, carrying 114 army personnel and 11 crew members — 125 people in total — went down just after departing Puerto Leguizamo in the Putumayo region. The cause of the crash has not been established.
President Gustavo Petro confirmed that investigators have yet to determine what brought down the aircraft, as emergency teams raced to the scene to assist survivors and recover victims.
The Defense Ministry said it has activated all emergency protocols to deliver aid to those affected and their families, as authorities simultaneously work to piece together the circumstances of the tragedy.
Defense Minister Pedro Sanchez appealed for restraint amid the unfolding crisis.
"I express my most sincere condolences to the families of those affected and, out of respect for their grief, I urge avoiding speculation until official information is available," Sanchez said.
With rescue and recovery operations still underway, the death toll could rise as officials gain fuller access to the crash site.
