UK Deploys HMS Dragon to Eastern Mediterranean
Addressing lawmakers in a formal statement to MPs, Healey said the vessel would reinforce an allied defensive line already taking shape across the region.
Royal Air Force and Royal Navy pilots have collectively logged nearly 900 flying hours defending Cyprus and, as Healey put it, "Jordan, Bahrain, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. We have more jets in the region than at any time in the last 15 years," he said.
An additional 500 air defense personnel have been deployed to the island, Healey confirmed. Britain is also working in close coordination with the Greek Cypriot Administration to synchronize allied contributions — including those from the United States, France, and Greece — in bolstering regional security.
HMS Dragon arrives as a formidable asset, outfitted with the Sea Viper missile system engineered to detect and neutralize airborne threats. The warship will operate in tandem with Wildcat helicopters drawn from the Royal Navy's 815 Naval Air Squadron, armed with Martlet missiles purpose-built for drone interception.
British air power has already been tested in combat. Royal Air Force Typhoon and F-35 jets have successfully shot down multiple drones over Jordan and near coalition positions in Iraq, officials confirmed.
The deployments come as regional hostilities continue to intensify following the Feb. 28 joint US-Israeli offensive against Iran — a campaign that has now claimed more than 1,340 lives, among them former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Tehran has since unleashed waves of drone and missile strikes against Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf nations hosting American forces, inflicting casualties, battering infrastructure, and sending tremors through global markets and aviation networks.
