Denmark Kicks Off Military Deployments to Greenland
Advanced command personnel have arrived in Greenland to establish logistical frameworks and operational infrastructure anticipating potential deployment of substantial Danish and partner nation forces, a broadcaster reported on Wednesday.
The preliminary unit's mission encompasses preparing installations and distribution networks to accommodate primary military contingents during subsequent phases.
Incoming reinforcements will draw from Danish Army formations, bolstering Copenhagen's military footprint across the territory.
Danish combat resources remain largely committed to NATO operations throughout the Baltic region, constraining available deployments.
The autonomous Danish territory has emerged as a geopolitical focal point due to Arctic positioning and extensive mineral deposits.
Both Copenhagen and Nuuk have categorically dismissed territorial sale overtures, reasserting Denmark's sovereign authority.
Tuesday saw Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen announce expanded permanent military establishment plans for Greenland.
"We are now moving forward with the whole issue of a more permanent larger presence in Greenland from Danish defense, but also with the participation of other countries," he told reporters. "Just as we had in 2025, where we saw that there were other NATO countries participating in exercise and training activities in Greenland, we will also see this in 2026."
Sunday brought renewed American territorial claims when Trump declared Washington must secure Greenland to forestall Russian or Chinese control. He previously characterized Greenland acquisition as an "absolute necessity" for US economic security, likening it to a "large real estate deal."
