Four hundred civilians escape Sudan’s Kordofan as insecurity worsens
Assessments conducted by field teams indicated that worsening security conditions on January 11 and 12 led to the displacement of approximately 125 residents from Kadugli and around 270 from Dilling. Those affected were reported to have sought safety in neighboring areas of White Nile state.
Kadugli and Dilling have remained encircled since the early stages of the conflict more than two years ago by the Rapid Support Forces and allied armed factions. Throughout this period, the two cities have repeatedly come under artillery bombardment and drone strikes, contributing to ongoing civilian hardship.
Recent estimates also show a sharp rise in displacement across the wider Kordofan region, with nearly 65,000 people forced from their homes across its three states between late October and the end of December 2025, as stated by reports.
Territorial control in Sudan remains deeply divided. The Rapid Support Forces are reported to hold all five states in the western Darfur region, with the exception of parts of northern North Darfur that are still under army control. Meanwhile, the Sudanese army maintains authority over most areas in the remaining 13 states spanning the south, north, east, and central regions, including the capital, Khartoum.
The war between the Sudanese military and the Rapid Support Forces, which erupted in April 2023, has resulted in the deaths of thousands and forced millions more to flee their homes, creating one of the country’s most severe humanitarian crises in recent history.
