Philippines Declares Mourning Day as Landfill Disaster Leaves 13 Dead
Cebu City council members voted to designate Jan. 16 as an official day of mourning while simultaneously approving a state of calamity declaration for the municipality following the Binaliw landfill disaster, a news outlet reported.
"This is a solemn recognition of the tragic landslide incident that occurred in Barangay Binaliw which claimed lives that cost immeasurable grief," said Councilor Jun Alcover.
Recovery crews entered their seventh consecutive day of operations Wednesday, frantically searching for 23 laborers presumed entombed under the massive rubble pile.
The catastrophe unfolded Thursday at a privately managed waste disposal site in Cebu City within the Central Visayas region, striking while employees performed their duties on-site.
Emergency response personnel are deploying both industrial excavation equipment and hand-digging techniques as the likelihood of finding survivors diminishes with each passing hour.
