Russia accuses West of pushing regime change in Iran

(MENAFN) Russia has accused Western nations of attempting to overthrow Iran’s government by employing tactics akin to a color revolution, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said, in reference to the ongoing protests in the country.

Zakharova warned that foreign powers are seeking to turn peaceful demonstrations into “cruel and senseless unrest” and reiterated Moscow’s opposition to interference in Iran’s domestic affairs.

US President Donald Trump has publicly expressed support for the protesters in recent days, stating that the US is “locked and loaded” to intervene and that America will “start shooting” if Iranian authorities use force against demonstrators. Israel has also endorsed the unrest, with its intelligence agency Mossad admitting to having operatives inside the country.

Tehran has blamed Washington and Jerusalem, claiming that the US and Israel have played a “big hand” in fueling the protests.

Zakharova described Washington’s threats as “absolutely unacceptable,” warning that any military strikes on Iran could destabilize the entire Middle East. She also attributed the economic crisis driving the protests to Western sanctions, saying that prolonged pressure has harmed ordinary Iranians and that the West is seeking to exploit social and economic tensions to “destroy the Iranian state.”
