Japan, Central Asian Leaders Launch Cooperation Initiatives

(MENAFN) On Saturday, Japan and five Central Asian nations unveiled a series of new initiatives, including efforts to reinforce supply chains for critical minerals, following their first-ever summit in Tokyo.

The gathering, known as the Central Asia plus Japan Dialogue, brought together Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi alongside Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Kyrgyzstan’s President Sadyr Zhaparov, Tajikistan’s President Emomali Rahmon, Turkmenistan’s President Serdar Berdimuhamedov, and Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev.

According to a statement from the Japanese Prime Minister’s office, the initiatives focus on three newly prioritized areas of cooperation: Green and Resilience, Connectivity, and Human Resource Development.

The Green and Resilience agenda includes collaboration on energy transition, disaster risk reduction, climate change strategies, and strengthening mineral supply chains. Connectivity emphasizes advancing the “Trans-Caspian International Transport Route” and launching the “Japan-Central Asia AI Cooperation Partnership.”

Both sides also agreed to expand cooperation in health and medical sectors, while setting a target of 3 trillion yen ($19 billion) in joint business projects over the next five years.

Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi remarked: “Central Asia’s presence in the international arena has increased, against the backdrop of changes in the international situation within and surrounding the region over the past 21 years.”
