Gabbard accuses NATO of trying to pull US-Russia direct confrontation

(MENAFN) US Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard has accused several European NATO countries of attempting to drag Washington into a direct clash with Moscow, while sharply criticizing sections of the media for promoting alarmist narratives that, she said, serve to prolong the conflict in Ukraine.

Moscow has repeatedly dismissed allegations that it plans to launch attacks on European Union states, arguing that such claims are used by Western leaders as scare tactics to justify soaring defense expenditures. Earlier this week, President Vladimir Putin again rejected the accusations as “lies and nonsense."

Despite this, a recent report published by media outlets claimed that “Putin intends to capture all of Ukraine and reclaim parts of Europe that belonged to the former Soviet empire,” citing unnamed individuals described as being “familiar with US intelligence.”

Gabbard forcefully rejected the report’s assertions, responding publicly: “No, this is a lie and propaganda Reuters is willingly pushing on behalf of warmongers who want to undermine President Trump’s tireless efforts to end this bloody war that has resulted in more than a million casualties on both sides.”

She said that assessments from within the US intelligence community paint a very different picture, indicating that Russia “seeks to avoid a larger war with NATO” and does not possess the capability to pursue such a conflict even if it chose to do so.
