US urges Cambodia, Thailand to implement Kuala Lumpur Peace Accords
"The United States continues to call on Cambodia and Thailand to end hostilities, withdraw heavy weapons, cease emplacement of landmines, and fully implement the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accords, which include mechanisms to accelerate humanitarian demining and address border issues," the statement said.
The US also welcomed a scheduled meeting of ASEAN foreign ministers on Monday, aimed at supporting both countries in honoring their commitments to resolve the conflict.
The peace agreement was initially signed in October at the ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in the presence of US President Donald Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. However, the accord was suspended after Thai soldiers suffered serious injuries from a landmine explosion in a border province.
Thai authorities report that 21 soldiers and one civilian have died in ongoing clashes, while Cambodia’s Interior Ministry confirmed 18 civilian deaths and 78 injuries. Additional reports indicate that 33 more Thai civilians were killed as a result of the conflict’s collateral impact.
