China Protests Tokyo Senior Lawmaker’s Taiwan Visit
At a press briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said Beijing “firmly opposes the visit and has protested to the Japanese side,” emphasizing that Taiwan is “a province of China.”
“Let me stress that Japanese Liberal Democratic Party lawmakers’ visit to China’s Taiwan region violates the one-China principle, the four political documents between China and Japan and Japan’s own commitments made to China,” Lin stated, reiterating Beijing’s objections.
The Japanese delegation included Koichi Hagiuda of the Liberal Democratic Party, who met with Taiwanese leader William Lai Ching-te on Monday. According to Hagiuda’s post on the social media platform X, the two discussed cooperation in economic and cultural fields.
In the briefing, Lin reiterated China’s position that “there is one China in the world, and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory,” and urged Japan to “reflect on and correct its wrongdoings, retract Prime Minister Takaichi’s erroneous remarks, and not to interfere in China’s internal affairs.”
Lin also warned that “The DPP authorities will not succeed in seeking ‘Taiwan independence’ by ingratiating themselves with Japan. Their disgraceful acts will only lead to a dead end,” referring to Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party.
The latest protest follows heightened diplomatic friction after Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said on Nov. 7 that a Chinese attack on Taiwan could legally constitute a “survival-threatening situation” for Japan, potentially triggering collective self-defense measures. Beijing condemned her remarks and demanded they be retracted, contributing to deteriorating bilateral relations.
