Google’s Vast Data Advantage Raises Concerns in AI Race

(MENAFN) Google’s ability to access a far larger pool of online information than its rivals in the artificial intelligence (AI) competition — particularly compared to ChatGPT-maker OpenAI — provides the company with a distinct advantage.

Although ChatGPT continues to lead in monthly active users, surpassing Google Gemini, recent findings show Gemini outperforming ChatGPT in terms of user growth and time spent on the platform, according to US-based analytics firm Sensor Tower.

As a cornerstone of Internet history through its search engine, Google expanded its reach by investing in diverse technologies such as YouTube and the Android operating system. Combined with its dominance in online search, these assets give the company unparalleled data resources to train its AI models.

While this data supremacy strengthens Google’s position in AI development, debates are intensifying over whether the company is edging toward a monopoly in the tech sector.

Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince described Google as the most influential player in Internet history over the past 27 years, during an interview with US magazine Wired.

Prince noted that Google built all the necessary tools to monetize web traffic and has now become a major force in AI research. He explained that Google’s integration of its search engine with AI creates a formidable challenge for competitors.

"Prince says Cloudflare found that Google currently sees 3.2 times more pages on the internet than OpenAI, 4.6 times more than Microsoft, and 4.8 times more than Anthropic or Meta does. Put simply, ‘They have this incredibly privileged access,' " Prince says, according to the article released on Dec. 4.
