Rubio Urges Immediate Ceasefire Amid Cambodia-Thailand Tensions

(MENAFN) US Secretary of State Marco Rubio called for an urgent halt to fighting along the Cambodia-Thailand border on Tuesday, following a resurgence of clashes that have claimed at least 10 lives.

"The United States is concerned by ongoing fighting and casualties along the Cambodia-Thailand border," Rubio posted on US social media platform X.

He emphasized that "both sides should immediately cease hostilities, protect civilians, and return to the de-escalatory measures outlined in the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accords."

The confrontations have so far resulted in the deaths of seven Cambodian civilians and three Thai soldiers since Monday. Bangkok reported 29 Thai soldiers injured, while Cambodia recorded 20 civilian casualties.

The latest hostilities erupted early Monday after Thai F-16 jets carried out airstrikes, following accusations from Bangkok that Phnom Penh conducted a "border attack" which killed one soldier.

The violence has forced thousands of people to flee their homes along the border region.
Both nations had signed a peace agreement in Kuala Lumpur on October 26 after a border dispute previously led to deadly clashes.

US President Donald Trump on Monday called on Cambodia and Thailand to fully adhere to their ceasefire obligations, while Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim urged both sides to exercise restraint.
