Turkey’s electric vehicle sales surge since January

(MENAFN) Electric vehicle (EV) sales in Türkiye have seen a dramatic rise this year, doubling to 166,665 units by November compared with 83,298 during the same period last year, according to reports based on data from the Automotive Distributors’ and Mobility Association (ODMD).

Between January and November, the Turkish market recorded sales of 442,650 gasoline-powered cars, 251,992 hybrids, 69,741 diesel vehicles, and 7,399 models running on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).

Fully electric car purchases reached 164,665 units in the same timeframe, and when extended-range EVs are included, the total climbed to 166,665 — representing 17.8% of all car sales in the country.

Traditional fuel vehicles continued on a downward path. The figures indicate that gasoline car sales dropped 15.5% in the first eleven months of the year, while diesel models declined 18.8%.

Conversely, demand for alternative powertrains surged. LPG car sales increased 33.9%, hybrids rose 71.3%, and fully electric models jumped 111.4%.

With global automakers phasing out diesel production, the Turkish market is no longer receiving new diesel models, contributing to the ongoing decline in their sales.

Gasoline vehicles held 47.2% of total market share in January–November, down sharply from 62% a year earlier. Diesel cars also slipped, going from 10.1% to 7.4%, while LPG accounted for 0.8% of sales.

Fully electric cars saw their share nearly double, rising from 9.2% to 17.6%, and hybrid models advanced from 17.4% to 26.9%. When combining all EV categories — fully electric, extended-range, and hybrid — these vehicles made up 44.7% of the market, amounting to 418,657 units. This means that four out of every ten cars sold in Türkiye over the period were electric or hybrid.

Plug-in hybrid models also posted a striking increase, reaching 42,857 units and accounting for 4.6% of the market — a 658.9% jump compared to last year.
