Guterres praises Maria Machado for winning 2025 Nobel Peace Prize
"I congratulate Maria Corina Machado on being awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize," Guterres said. He highlighted her dedication, noting that "for decades, Ms. Machado has been a champion of democracy and a voice of unity in her country of Venezuela."
Drawing attention to the Nobel Committee's statement, Guterres emphasized the connection between democracy and peace, stating, "the tools of democracy are the tools of peace." He further pointed out that, amid rising global threats to democracy and the rule of law, the prize served as a tribute to all individuals striving to protect civil and political rights worldwide. Guterres concluded by calling the award "a stirring reminder of the resilience and power of the democratic spirit."
Machado’s selection as the recipient of the prestigious award came despite recent public claims by US President Donald Trump, who had lobbied for himself as a deserving candidate.
The Nobel Peace Prize, which was established in 1901 as per the will of Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel, has been awarded 105 times to 142 laureates, including both individuals and organizations.
Last year’s award went to the Nihon Hidankyo, a grassroots group of Japanese atomic bombing survivors. Notable recipients of the award include the International Committee of the Red Cross, which has been honored three times, and the UN Refugee Agency, which has received the prize twice.
