EU Extends Russia Sanctions

(MENAFN) The European Council declared on Monday that the European Union will prolong its existing sector-based sanctions targeting Russia for another six months.

In a formal announcement, the council stated: "The Council today renewed the EU restrictive measures in view of the Russian Federation’s continuing actions destabilising the situation in Ukraine for a further 6 months, until 31 January 2026."

These penalties were initially imposed in 2014 after Russia’s unlawful annexation of Crimea, and later broadened in 2022 following the outbreak of the full-scale war in Ukraine.

The sanctions affect several sectors, such as commerce, banking, energy, technology, transportation, and luxury merchandise.

The statement further detailed that the measures include a prohibition on Russian oil transported by sea, the removal of key financial institutions from the SWIFT global banking network, and a ban on Kremlin-supported media from operating within the EU.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas confirmed the decision on X, posting: "The EU today officially agreed to extend sectoral sanctions on Russia."

She reaffirmed their determination to "pile pressure" on Moscow to bring an end to the conflict in Ukraine, emphasizing, "Each sanction weakens Russia’s ability to wage war."
