UN Special Rapporteur Demands Sanctions Against Israel
(MENAFN) On Tuesday, Francesca Albanese, the UN special rapporteur, urged the immediate imposition of sanctions on Israel, describing its actions in Gaza as genocide and one of the darkest chapters in history.
Speaking during official meetings in Madrid, which included discussions with various political groups from the Spanish Parliament, Albanese emphasized that global inaction must come to an end.
She framed the issue as a matter of basic human decency, rather than one of political concerns.
"Condemning the catastrophe in Palestine and taking action against Israel is not a political issue, it is a matter of humanity," Albanese told journalists, stressing that it was essential to take decisive action against Israel’s ongoing conduct.
Albanese characterized Israel’s ongoing violence and oppression in Palestine as deeply rooted and called for a strong, coordinated international response.
She stated, "The time has come to implement a complete halt of diplomatic, economic, and financial relations with Israel—not just as an act of solidarity, but also as a preventative measure."
The special rapporteur accused Israel of committing violations of international law with impunity, adding, “Israel is writing one of the darkest chapters in its history in Gaza. Once we understand what it has done, we will be ashamed—but it will be too late.”
Additionally, Albanese criticized the "Gaza Humanitarian Aid Fund," established by the United States and Israel, claiming it does not address the actual humanitarian needs on the ground.
"This is a rejection of humanitarian aid," she concluded.
