UN political chief urges diplomacy amid tension over Iran's nuclear activities

(MENAFN) The United Nations’ political affairs chief emphasized the urgent need for diplomatic efforts to maintain the peaceful purpose of Iran’s nuclear activities.

According to reports, the UN Undersecretary-General for Political Affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo, addressed the Security Council on Tuesday regarding the progress of Resolution 2231. This resolution, which affirms the 2015 nuclear agreement involving Iran and six major global powers—Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia, and the United States—will expire on October 18, 2025.

DiCarlo noted with concern that despite the approaching expiration date, the key aims of the resolution, along with those of the nuclear agreement itself, have yet to be fully met.

The 2015 deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), was intended to guarantee that Iran’s nuclear efforts would remain peaceful. However, as outlined in the reports, it has endured considerable setbacks, especially following the United States’ decision to exit the agreement in 2018 during the presidency of Donald Trump.

In recent months, member states involved in the JCPOA have stepped up their attempts to revive the full application of the accord. At the same time, Iran and the U.S. held five rounds of direct negotiations with mediation from Oman. “Regrettably, neither of these initiatives produced a way forward to ensuring the peaceful nature of Iran's nuclear program.”

Rising military tensions have further diminished the likelihood of achieving full compliance with the resolution. Armed conflict between Israel and Iran since June 13, along with US airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites on Saturday (New York time), have further strained the situation. On Monday, Iran launched attacks on a U.S. base in Qatar, increasing instability in an already volatile region, according to DiCarlo.
